Sustainability

Our Values

why & how we prioritize

Good design is the ultimate in sustainability.

Sure, you can make a dress for 30x (yes, really!) less somewhere halfway around the world under God-knows-what conditions, using toxic materials, and then ship it back here to the USA wasting tons of fuel and energy from both the planet and the humans involved in the process.

But why would you want to?

Where's the joy in that?!

When we began this company, we knew sustainability would be at the heart of everything we do from day 1. It is foundational to every part of the process of production.

From our complimentary Lifetime Repairs Guarantee, to recycling and reusing of fabric scraps in partnership with programs like the Rare Bear sew-in for children with rare diseases, to intentionally not only making our dresses in the USA but also only shipping within the USA—sustainability is a feature, not an afterthought.

We thoughtfully and meticulously design our dresses so that you actually love them and wear them regularly—rather than leave them to languish in closet purgatory. NANCY DEMARIA dresses, with their timeless, vintage-inspired silhouettes and supremely functional design, are the epitome of slow fashion and a capsule wardrobe on steroids. As we fondly like to say, the Workhorse™ is "one dress to rule them all".

It is entirely possible you’ll pass this dress on to your own daughters someday.

Some might say we're picky with our process—even a little obsessed. We just like to think we have very, very high standards.

And I bet you do too. That's why you're here.

Read on for a more in-depth discussion of our process, and if you ever have any Qs not answered here, please reach out to us at:

And sustainability is at the heart of all we do.

Ethical production

Our Values

Proudly hand-sewn in the Lititz, PA by expert dressmakers paid 3x a living wage, ethical production is of the utmost importance to us.

Not only are the pieces made in the USA, but many of the fabrics are also knitted and printed here in the USA as well.

We stand behind our work, and genuinely want you to get the most out of our garments.

Our Values

Deep pockets, two-way stretch, stain-resistant, wrinkle-free, a one-of-a-kind detachable nursing cover, flattering sash, reinforced buttons . . . we could go on and on about the design of the Workhorse™ for days.

The bottomline is that if a dress is not both functional and flattering, you won't wear it.

That's why good design is the ultimate in sustainability. More wear = less consumption = a better planet.

Our Values

Frustrated by the never-ending cycle of fast fashion consumerism? Us, too.

From our complimentary Lifetime Repairs Guarantee, to recycling and reusing of fabric scraps in partnership with programs like the Rare Bear sew-in for children with rare diseases, to lining every dress with 100% organic cotton knitted and printed in the USA, to intentionally not only making our dresses in the USA but also only shipping within the USA—sustainability is a feature, not an afterthought.

Our Values

We designed our dress with a timeless, flattering silhouette made to last through the ages.

Pleating in front and back add volume to move as you go about your day. The higher-than-natural waist easily accommodates gaining or losing 25 pounds throughout your lifetime. The girls' dresses are even double-hemmed at the bottom to be released as they grow. And—always—we have sleeves that to go to just below or at the elbow.

When you feel gorgeous, you look gorgeous.

F.A.Q

For those of you obsessed with the details, just like us ♥️

Why do you rarely offer sales?

What do you do with UNused fabric scraps?

Are there any loopholes I need to know about?

This company is amazing! I wish I would have known about YOU when I was a new mom!

Why do you only ship within the USA?

From where do you source your fabrics?

Our fabrics are knitted and printed in the USA using less than a thimble of water, purchased at local family-owned fabric stores, and acquired from vintage sources.

Our on-demand supplier in the USA specifically only prints what is ordered, knits and prints our fabrics in the USA, using only a *thimble* of water (unlike the 100 two-Liter bottles worth most factories use to produce the same amount of material).

Are your fabrics made from natural fibers?

The pigment inks meet the Oeko-Tex 100 requirements to be free of restricted chemicals and are mixed from 4-8 basic colors as your fabric is printed, so unlike screen printing, there’s no mixing of colors in advance.

Yes and no.

Natural fabrics like linen or hemp, or even Tencel, don’t have the functionality that we're looking for. The fabric needs to be able to be machine washed cold, hung to dry, with no ironing. It needs to have stretch. It needs to be resistant to stain and things like dog hair. We simply can’t find all that with natural fibers. Not to the level of quality we're looking for. Not yet, anyway.

However, because of our superb, functional design, these dresses are going to be something that you actually wear and love, not only during pregnancy and postpartum, but for years after.

We do line the upper torso in both the girls and women’s dresses with 100% organic cotton knitted and printed in the USA. The 100% organic cotton lining the upper torso also has two-way stretch – important for the functionality as you go about your day – and makes it less likely that

the seams will come apart with repeated wear. The torso area, the area that touches the body the most, is lined. But the outer portion of the garment still has all the qualities I mention above, and is therefore more functional, and therefore you will love wearing it, wear it more often, and actually . . . become so addicted to how good it makes you feel you’ll begin to resent all your other poorly designed clothing.

Who cares how “sustainably” something was made, if it’s only going to end up in the landfill next year because of it's poor, non-functional, and unflattering design?

We never send unused scraps of fabric for NANCY DEMARIA dresses to the landfill.

It’s collected and sent to programs such as the RARE Bear sew-in, a grassroots outreach initiative for kids with rare diseases, in partnership with Spoonflower in Durham, NC.

As it's being knitted and printed, before it's even sent to us, fabric that doesn’t meet the Spoonflower high standards is shredded for industrial applications like car upholstery and furniture stuffing, bedding and flooring.

As you know, all our dresses are made in the USA by expert dressmakers paid 3x a living wage. But why do we also only ship within the USA? That’s intentional. It’s part of our commitment to sustainability.

By only shipping within the USA, we decrease transportation costs, and the effects those have on the environment. There is often (usually) no

need to ship clothing half-way around the world. Design better products, buy fewer of them, decrease waste. If you want to have this dress in your country, contact a local dressmaker and make it happen! I'll even provide the pattern.

Local over global, baby.

Nope—no loopholes.

If you ever have an issue with the quality of any of our garments, please return it to us for complimentary repairs.

This doesn’t cover things like stains (though most of our materials are stain resistant) or if you intentionally destroy the garment in some way. It is also not an alteration service.

But anything related to quality? Yes. 100%. Seams coming apart? A button pops off? Send it back. Read more on our Shipping & Returns page.

Though, the reason we offer this guarantee is that we’re pretty confident you won’t have to use it for many years, even with regular wear! That’s the beauty of something made with craftsmanship and care.

Our prices reflect fair labor practices, quality materials, and intentional design—all of which is unaffected by the traditional cycle of fast fashion consumerism. 😘

I know, right??

We’ll let you in on a little secret. These dresses are great for the new mom stage of life . . . and beyond.

Age ain’t nothing but a number.

So go ahead, try one for yourself, regardless of how “new” of a mom you are, or if you’re not even a mom at all! They are timelessly and exquisitely designed for the female form, no matter the stage of life. 💃

As you know, all our dresses are made in the USA by expert dressmakers paid 3x a living wage. But why do we also only ship within the USA? That’s intentional. It’s part of our commitment to sustainability.
